Chapter 12
Ryanne heard Duncan scream into the rainy night. She was a good mile away, yet still, she heard him. The pain and fear in that scream cutting through her like shards of glass.
She had no idea what she’d done to bring about this change in him. And as she wiped the rain drops from her face—or were those tears?—she considered going back and trying one more time to talk him out of whatever black pit of suffering he was sinking into.
Walking in circles, she chewed on her thumbnail and tried to figure out what to do. Give him some space? Go back and make sure he was all right? Disappear from his life forever?
A sharp pain cut through the center of her chest until she could barely catch her breath.
One thing she did know—she’d never been loved like that wolf had loved her. All he’d needed was a little encouragement, and she was so glad she hadn’t given up on him.
At least, until he’d taken one look at her afterward and lost his mind. She’d done nothing but smile at him.
He’d stared at her like he’d seen a ghost.
He’d stared right into her eyes…
Ryanne came to an abrupt halt.
Oh, gods.
Her eyes. It was her eyes.
He didn’t know what she was. He’d assumed she was na maithe, a faerie of the light and happy variety, so to speak.
Well, at least until now.
But how could he not have known? His pack was scheming with her father. If he knew what her father was, then he should have known what she was.
And then she had a very chilling thought.
Could it be they didn’t know about the so-called prince?
A horrific scream echoed through the trees.
Ryanne took off running as fast as she could go. She was nearly back to her wolf when she heard them. Footsteps that weren’t her own.
Immediately, she made herself unseen again as a wave of fear crashed over her. Not her fear. Duncan’s. She froze where she was and listened, shivering from the damp, night air that suddenly seemed so much colder.
The rain dripped through the trees. An owl hooted somewhere close by, pleased with its kill.
There. More footsteps. One sounded like a human. The others…did not.
Wolves?
Dammit. Thomas’s wolves were still here. Still searching for her. It had to be. If going back to the club hadn’t been stupid enough, coming back here most definitely had been. They were lucky they hadn’t been intruded upon a few minutes earlier. Both she and Duncan could’ve been slaughtered, and she doubted either of them would’ve noticed.
A bellow of rage echoed through the trees.
Duncan!
Ryanne ran forward a few steps without thinking. Stopped. And then, with a shake of her wet hair, continued on. Her wolf was hurting and vulnerable. If the others had taken him unawares, he would be killed without a doubt.
She had to help him.
“Dammit, Thomas!” Keeping her voice down, she cursed him all the way back to the Jeep. Still a good distance away, she took to the trees
